Aircel Allows You to Call in Your Facebook Updates

Facebook India's done something no other big branch of Facebook in the world has done yet. Aircel users can now 'call in' their Facebook statuses. Aircel users need to dial 51555 and put in their basic info, and then update to their wall, or even their friends' wall. This feature uses voice recognition technology to work. Aircel says that if you use this technology on your friend's wall, they will get an SMS alerting them and they can reply via dialing in as well (if they are Aircel subscribers). The company hasn't mentioned how much this feature will cost though.

Facebook Wi-Fi-Jacking

Updating your Facebook status from a Wi-Fi café? A stranger can log in to your account and pretend to be you. Blame Firesheep, a free Firefox plug-in that captures login cookies as they fly by unencrypted. Programmer Eric Butler wrote the program to demonstrate how much data people send "in the clear" without realizing it. Using Firesheep, a hijacker can access your account on Facebook, Twitter, and two dozen other sites. Any information you thought was private now isn't. Feeling naked yet?

The failure of sites such as Facebook and Twitter to require secure logins is "an enormous privacy problem," says the EFF's Eckersley. "Google demonstrated this could be done on a colossal scale at minimal cost with Gmail. Now we need to get the rest of them to do that."

The solution: Use EFF and the Tor Project's HTTPS Everywhere plug-in for Firefox to force sites to use SSL encryption if available. And don't log in to sites containing sensitive info from a public network.

Researcher uses Amazon cloud to crack Wi-Fi passwords

A security researcher from Germany named Thomas Roth has written a program that can crack the WPA encryption that protects many Wi-Fi networks in a few minutes. His software employs a "brute force" attack, where passwords are deciphered by successively varying combinations of numbers and digits, and since naturally that can take some serious computer resources he tapped on Amazon's EC2 cloud services to get the job done. 

Initially it took him 20 minutes to crack the key for a network in his neighborhood, but after some modifications to his software he was able to bring the time down to only six minutes. Amazon rents its service to customers for 28 cents per minute so the total cost of the crack came to just $1.68. 

Of course this is a violation of Amazon’s acceptable use policy, but Roth is hoping to show network administrators that WPA-PSK is not strong enough to keep out intruders and that they should be using stronger encryption algorithms – especially at a time when powerful and inexpensive cloud computing services are accessible to anyone. He plans to distribute his software publicly and give demonstrations on using it at the Black Hat conference in Washington D.C.

AMD's new chips combine graphics chips and a general-purpose CPU on the same piece of silicon, which AMD says will make them speedier and more power-efficient. The chips will be manufactured using 32nm technology.
